Data from A E Durrant, The Smoke That Thunders (Harare, Zimbabwe: African Publishing Group, 1997), p. 50. Works numbers were 16216-16225 in 1904.
Locobase 10540 shows the original Twelve-wheeler design supplied to the CSAR as reboilered by the railway. LM wrote that locomotive superintendent W J Hosgood converted five similar BM&R 4-8-0s to shunters (switchers). The work was performed at the BM&R's workshops in Umtali.
Changes included the addition of a bogie carrying one axle "pivotted at a radius of 5 ft 7 1/2 in [1.71 m]" and a new round-topped boiler replacing the original Belpaire firebox.
