Data from A[nthony] E[dward] Durrant, Locomotives of Eastern Europe (New York: Augustus M Kelley, Publishers, 1966), pp 47, 49. with data double-checked on the First Romanian railway club ([] -- visited 14 January 2004).
These were copies of the Austrian 214 class of 2-8-4s. Malaxa built 58 while Resita produced 27 from 1936 to 1949. This was a substantial machine, the Romanian Railway club site points out, with vanadium-steel crossheads and a main rod measuring 4.25 m long (13.94 ft).
But the design was far from faultless. The cylinder saddle was a weak point, says the site, and the driving axle bearings caused trouble. In at least one instance, one cylinder just tore off the locomotive, which naturally derailed with heavy damage. Another limitation was a natural resonance between the side rods and the frame which occurred at speeds between 60 and 70 km/h (37-43 mph) with the greatest intensity at 65 km/h (40 mph). All the engineers could do was to move above or below this speed range as quickly as possible.
