Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Type 81 (Locobase 21212)

Data from "Locomotives", Type 81, Usines du Creusot-Schneider et Cie (Creusot: A Temporal, 1875), n.a. See also Metik Sergey's photo of the 1877 Orenburg railway station at [], last accessed 29 September 2024. Works numbers were 1781-1800 in 1875.

Orenburg was located on the Ural river in the southern Urals region about 1,500 km (930 miles) southeast of Moscow, which forms the boundary between Europe and Asia. Metik Sergey's caption underscores the border-city influences reflected in the Orenburg's station:

"The architecture of station comprises the European monumentalism and the Asian color as connects among themselves roads of the European and Asian direction. From the moment of construction the station building was repeatedly reconstructed, with increase in inhabitants and directions of movement of trains."

This batch of new locomotives presented the dimensions and sizes suitable for local passenger service. The large, urn-shaped stack suggests local wood or low-calorie coal as the primary fuel.
