Data from "1893 v Les 130 de la classe N (Russie)--Ligne Moscou v St. Petersbourg", part of a series "Locos compound a 2 cylindres pour trains rapides" posted 18 October 2011 at 16:56 on the e-train.fr forum at [], last accessed 13 December 2012.
The e-train contributor explains that the Russian Ministry of Transport requested the development of a more powerful high-speed passenger locomotive capable of pulling 390 tons at 80 kph (49.7 mph). The design was prepared in 1892 by the Ateliers Alexandrow with the assistance of Russian designer N. L. Schtschukin and well-known Belgian locomotive designer Alfred Belpaire.
Perhaps the most unusual feature of this schnell-lokomotive was the adoption of the Mogul wheel arrangement. Few other Moguls in Locobase had drivers even as tall as 72" (1,829 mm). Despite Belpaire's participation, this design did not have the eponymous flat-topped firebox.
The design, which apparently was built in the hundreds (the records aren't clear), did see some changes. The original Joy gear was replaced in later batches with Walschaert outside radial gear. More power in later batches came from more cylinder volume (when later engines were fitted with 500 mm (19.69") x 730 mm (28.74")) and higher boiler pressure (11.75 atm or 170 psi). Locobase calculates the result as 13,021 lb. Adhesion weight climbed to 45,000 kg (99,208 kg).
Still later, driver diameter was reduced to 1,700 mm (66.9").
Maximum speed had been claimed to be 115 km/h (71.4 mph), although service speed is given as 75 km/h (46.6 mph). Die Lokomotive of January 1921 offered a table of capabilities depending on grade that suggests how little margin there was in this design:
On the level 527 tons 75 km/h
0.6% grade 345 tons 35 km/h (21.7 mph)
0.8% grade 302 tons 30 km/h (18.6 mph)
1.0% grade 241 tons 30 km/h
Even so, the Ns served the Nicholas Line high-speed trains for over 20 years.
