North Natal Navigation Collieries 2-10-2 Locomotives in South_Africa

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 3249)

Data from DeGolyer, Vol 79, pp. 539+. Works number was 61553 in November 1930.

As can be seen from the dimensions, this was a very large engine for the Cape gauge. Firebox heating surface area included 14 sq ft (1.3 sq m) of arch tubes. Steam admission came through 10 inch (254 mm) piston valves.

It served a line that had very mild maximum grades (about 0.7%) and mimimum curve radii of 406 feet (123.75 metres) or 14 degrees. Nevertheless, Baldwin's specification included a requirement that the engine haul 650 tons up a 2% grade and 540 tons up 2/5%.

Delivered to North Natal, the Santa Fe tank later moved to Vryheid Coal & Iron.
