Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 10807)

Data from "Dickson Engines for South Africa", Railway & Locomotive Engineering, Vol XIII, No. 1 (January 1900), p. 3. See also Jim Peden, Letter in response to "The origins of Orenstein & Koppel", Industrial Railway Record, #46 (February 1973), pp. 361-371.

These are almost certainly the 4 locomotives with works numbers 1079-1082 that were ordered by Arthur Koppel for export to the Cape Collieries in J F Webber's list of Dickson locomotives. According to a the letter in the IRR, the four locomotives were named J S Smit, J J Speier, L J Meyer, and C Birkenstock. If these are the engines, then they were taken over by the Cape Government Railways practically upon delivery to the continent and renumbered 50-53.
