Class 1 (Locobase 5406)

Data from [link] holding of Baldwin narrow-gauge export locomotives (visited 22 Feb 2003). See also DeGolyer, Vol 78, pp. 427+ and Vol 79, pp. 557+. Works number was 58850 in November 1925 and 60009 in May 1927.

This Mountain tank looks like a smaller edition of the North Natal Navigation Collieries Santa Fe tank profiled in Locobase 3249. Maximum grade on Vryheid's 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail was 1.67% and minimum curve radii was 300 feet (91.4 metres) or 19.1 degrees. The radial valve gear actuated 8" (203 mm) piston valves.

2 eventually served Coronation-Amalgamated's joint venture Blesbok Colliery in Mpumalanga after it opened in 1948 at the coal seam just south of Witbank and east of Pretoria.
