Data from "Dundee Coal Co., Ltd. South Africa-Design 1118", Beyer-Garrrat Patent Articulated Locomotives (Manchester, England: Beyer-Peacock & Company Limited, 1931), archived on flickr's Historical Railway Images at [], et seq, p. 52. Works number was 6353 in 1927.
This Prairie Garratt (works # 6353) went to a the Dundee Coal & Coke firm, which was in Natal State, Union of South Africa. BP's 1931 report said that this engine went to work on the 11-mile(17.7 km) line between the colliery and Waschbank Station on the Natal Main Line. Its right-of-way was laid with 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail, presented a ruling grade of 1 in 79 (1.27%) and curves as tight as 300 ft radius. Dundee reported that they'd fixed the trailing load at 1,250 short tons (1,116 long tons), which allowed the colliery to move its daily output of 5,000 tons with "practically half the number of trains."
Later the 5 moved on to the Transvaal Navigation Collieries.
