Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class KM (Locobase 3625)

Data from Lionel Wiener, "Note sur les locomotives articuleees", Excepted from Revue Generale des Chemins de fer et des Tramways (May-June 1903), p. 22; and

Although the SAR's articulated locomotives were chiefly of the Garratt or Mallet layout, a few classes used other forms. This present group used the Kitson-Meyer arrangement of both sets of drivers leading their cylinders under a common frame and boiler with Belpaire firebox. Each engine unit pivoted on a center post as near as possible to the center of the unit; the two pivots were set 25 ft 6 in (7.77 m) apart.

The engine steamed poorly and were retired after only a few years.
