Rio Tinto

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 22 (Locobase 21177)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 23, p. 216; and Baldwin Locomotive Company, Record of Recent Contstruction, Volume 24, (Philadelphia: BLW, 1903), pp. 110-111. Works numbers were 18693-18698 in February 1900.

Apparently based on the 1895 8-coupled tanks delivered to Japan's Chikuho Railway, these engines proved problematic for the Rio Tinto. Using fireboxes and boilers of identical cal design, the Rio Tintos used more tubes of smaller diameter and slightly shorter length.
