Torralba-Soria 0-8-0 Locomotives in Spain

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 040-2241 (Locobase 3461)

Data from [], the web site of the Spanish National Railway. See also Justo Arenillas in "Las locomotoras belgas en el Madrid-Caceres-Portugal", Lineas Del Tren (as reproduced on [], viewed 28 April 2003).

Arenillas notes that the Stephenson valve gear on these "Spanish Great Central" engines was an unusual provision for Belgian-built locomotives. Most had the home-grown, but widely used, radial gear originally developed by Belgian Egide Walschaert. They also used the Belpaire firebox.

Class 231/040-2261 (Locobase 3463)

Data from [], the web site of the Spanish National Railway and from [].

These eight-coupleds were purchased by Torralba-Soria before that line was absorbed by the Sur. Although quite a bit smaller, this trio came from the same builder as the TS's 80-81, which were procured in the same year but fitted with Stephenson valve gear.

According to the ASAFAL website, "Estos eran los nombres originales de Sur de Espa'a:

101- Barcelona

102- Almanzora

103- Orán

These Belpaire-firebox engines were delivered in two batches, the first three in 1897.

Later the Andaluces operated them as 231-233. In 1941, RENFE incorporated them as 040-2261 / 040-2263.
