Maquinista Terrestre Y Maritima produced this replica of the first locomotive to enter service in Spain. The 1848 engine and her three sisters were built by the little-known English firm of Jones & Potts. They were of the "Crewe" type first invented by Buddicom and Joseph Locke in the early 1840s (see Locobase 648). The other engines were dubbed Barcelona, Cataluna, and Besos. Cost per engine was 2,400 British Pounds Sterling. (Peter Williams, who spotted the erroneous "US" in the commentary, noted that he comes from Newton le Willows where the locomotives were produced.)
According to the RENFE website article from which this data is taken, those engines had 74" drivers, and only one safety valve. On Mataro's first official run on 29 October 1848, she pulled 130 tons of train comprising 24 carriages loaded with 400 passengers.
The Museu account says that these first locomotives were retired because of their low power. The last photo published of the original Mataro was "in 1877 when it was displayed on a pedestal on the occasion of King Alfonso XII to the Catalunyan Exposition."
MTM's replica adopted some changes in pursuit of greater comfort and security. Injectors replaced pumps for more certain maintenance of safe water levels in the boiler. The new engine ran for the first time in public on 29 October 1948, the 100th anniversary of the original's debut.
Mataro went through a major overhaul in 2012, the scale of which grew as the initial inspection revealed a dangerous thinning in some of the boiler plates. Conducted at the Asociación para la Reconstrucción y Puesta en Servicio de Material Ferroviario Histórico (ARMF) en Lleida, the work proceeded in two phases. The first repaired the top sheet of the firebox, the second renewed the boiler including replacing all of the tubes.

(Without doubt, la 'Matar= is a unique gem of catalunya industrial patrimony and a symbol of progress and of the industrial revolution. The same entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit that it put in motion in 1848 is that which today has allowed its legacy to continue to live."
