According to the Via Libre entry, the upcoming Spanish-American exposition being held in Seville led the Spanish government to demand that the Andaluces buy some new passenger engines to bring visitors from the port of Cadiz. The relatively level profile led to the choice of a Pacific with taller drivers for higher speeds, although Via Libre notes that the three Norte engines had still larger wheels.

The builder was Spanish, but the plans were those of the German Maffei company. This explains the very Germanic look, says Via Libre.

The class remained in service in the Seville area until 1968.
