C.G. de Ferrocarriles Catalane Beyer-Garratt Locomotives in Spain

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 779)

Data from Gavin Hamilton's excellent compilation of Garratt data posted at [link]

(6 September 2005).

The first four (works #1960-1963) were delivered in 1922-1924. A repeat order for 4 more Double Mogul Garratts (works #2035-2038, road numbers 105-108) came in 1925-1926. These put 147,728 lb on the drivers and a total of 176,288 lb in service. Like the better-known Beyer, Peacocks, these had Belpaire fireboxes.

According to the Assicacio de Amics del Ferrocarril de Barcelona ([link], accessed 8 June 2007), these Garratts went into service all over the line. Typical trains were unit trains of Potash from Suria & Sallent and coal from Figols to Barcelona's dockside. Every so often they'd pull passenger trains of up to 12 coaches.

The arrival of diesels on the road in the 1960s meant the class's retirement.
