Sudan Expedition Railway 2-6-2 Locomotives in Sudan

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Endeavour (Locobase 20343)

Data from "Locomotive for Soudan Expedition Railway", Engineer, Volume 82 (23 October 1896), p. 414. Works numbers were 1335-1336 in 1896.

Although accompanied by a handsome portrait of the Endeavour and a detailed specification, the Engineer report doesn't include any weights. The second locomotive took the name Enterprise.

But no doubt should be held that the doughty little Prairie tank would be equal (It was British ...) to the challenging operating environment. The report explains that the Wadi Halfa-Dongola line was "a very rough one, and laid with inexperienced labour and under most trying conditions generally." Its gradients achieved 2% in some places, sometimes combined with sharp curves.
