Class E (Locobase 20551)

Data from "German Four-Wheeled Tank Locomotive", Railroad Gazette, Volume 15 (14 September 1883), p. 599; and "NOB E 2/2", Wikipedia . Esslingen works numbers were 1259-1262, 1312-1315 in 1873; 1341-1343 in 1874; 1457-1459 in 1875. SLM works numbers were 91-100 in 1876.

The short RG report and illustration included the comment that placing the water tank under the boiler required putting the Williams-Howe (aka Stephenson) link motion outside along with the cylinders and valves. Another adjustment was to move the two axles relatively far apart.

Preceded by eight home-built locomotives (four each in 1865 and 1868), the production variants by Esslingen and SLM had higher-pressure boilers. The last three Esslingens and all of the SLMs (thirteen of the 24) rolled on wheelbases lengthened by 200 mm (7.87") and were rated at 55 kph (34 mph).

The class enjoyed a long career, to the point that they received new boilers in 1900-1904 that were pressed to 10 bar (145 psi).
