Gotthardbahn 2-4-0 Locomotives in Switzerland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class C 2/3 (Locobase 5119)

Data from [link], last accessed 19 January 2017, (First viewed August 2002). The oddities of later numbering gave the earlier four engines (works #865-868) numbers 21-24, while the 1883 trio (works #1067-1069) bore 18-20.

1889-1893 saw the installation of Westinghouse airbrakes. The six that remained in service in 1901 received a slightly larger boiler of 1,404 sq ft with a firebox area of 81.76 sq ft (7.6 sq m) -- it held 182 tubes. Of the 1874 group, 21 was scrapped in 1896, the other three in 1905. 18 followed in 1906, but the other two endured until 1913.

Class E 2/3 (Locobase 5131)

Data from [link], last accessed 19 January 2017, (First viewed August 2002).

This stray, single 2-4-0 was of a slightly earlier vintage than the Karlsruhe-built engines. Was she a trial horse? In any case, she persisted until 1914.
