Based on Google translation of [link] (visited 16 August 2002). The webpage had an article from Schweizerische Bauzeitung (Swiss Polytechnic Review) dated October 14, 1916 (Vol 68, #16).

The article describes the backround of this particular rack design, which is a modified Abt system. The innovation in the provision of two sets of cylinders. On those stretches where adhesion working was sufficient, the outside cylinders drove Hall-type cranks through Heusinger valve gear. When they entered the rack sections, the locomotives switched to compound working, adding inside cylinders which drove the rack pinion through Joy gear.
