Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class ED 3/4 (Locobase 7567)

Data from Http://www.dampflok51.ch/dl51/techdat/index.html, a website of the BSB and particularly of the preserved #51, last accessed 12 June 2006.

51 left the SLM shops as works# 1726. 52 went into service at the same time and may have had the next works number. 53 was added a year later in 1908.

The little side tanks were said to be well-suited to the BSB's 20.9 km (13 miles) of steep grades and tight turns and could pull 90 metric tons up a 3 1/2% grade and a maximum speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). It was rated at 500 hp.

51's career continued for decades after the BSB's electrification made them redundant on that line. Leaving the BSB in 1928 and working first for another short line and later for a cement factory, 51 came into the hands of the association that cared for it as a museum engine in 1970. A major overhaul in 1998 was meant to ensure many more years of service including the 100th anniversary celebration of the BSB in 2007.
