Data from Specification 1439, Davenport Locomotive Works. See also Public utilities rates in the state of Illinois. Electric rates. In effect September 1, 1916 (Springfield, Schneppe & Barnes, state printers, 1917), pp. 4; and "House Wiring Campaign in Fifty Towns Brings $107,000 in New Business", Public Service Management, Volume.12-13 (May 1912), p. 200; and "Public Service Co. of Northern Illinois-", Poor's Manual of Public Utilities", 1st Annual Number (New York: Poor's Railroad Manual, 1913), pp. 1218-1219 for a detailed overview. Works number was 1232 in February 1912.
At the time the PSCNI bought this small saddle-tank, it operated sixteen suburban "steam stations" and three "hydraulic stations". So the 1 most likely moved coal around either at one station or among several. Public Service Management reported that the PSCNI had generated the $107,000 mentioned in the cited article from 1 October 1910 to 6 April 1912. The fifty towns had a total population of 175,000.
One brochure offered an electric flat-iron and "door bell ringing transformer" free of charge to a home-owner who signed up for house wiring under a two-years-to-pay, interest-free plan. There's a lot to unpick from this offer. One is the installment-payment plan. Another is the accompanying reassurance that "no damage will be done to the house decorations or fixtures ...A section of flooring here and there, a small hole in the wall through which to 'fish' the insulated wire, a modern fixture securely fastened on ceiling or wall, and presto--electricity is at your service."
Taken with a catalogue offering "up-to-date electrical fixtures", the company promoted an upgrade that most home-owners of the day almost certainly viewed as a fundamental improvement.
