Inter State Rapid Transit Co 0-4-2 Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 11883)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 13, p. 28 and p. 259. See Locobase 16366 for a skeptical 1877 view of steam dummies and Locobase 11577 for a supporting 1889 discussion of the problems associated with running steam dummies on urban street railways. Works numbers were 7986, 7992, 7994 in June 1886; 8051-8053, 8055-8056 in July 8703-8704, 8710-8711 in August 1887; 9399-9400 in August 1888.

Like rival East Fifth Street (Locobase 11577), this Kansas City street railway used the Baldwin "steam dummy" design to serve its lines. Only a couple years after the acceptance of this relatively large order of dummies, the ISRTC electrified its service and disposed of the fleet. At around that same time, Bill Eagleton of the railway wrote Baldwin to request a change in the valve to increase the average load up their steepest grade from two to three cars.

At least six went to work for lumber companies.
