Lafourche, Raceland & Lockport 0-4-2 Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 7 (Locobase 16558)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 19, p. 141. Baldwin works numbers are unclear.

Baldwin's specification shows an order for six locomotives from sugar planation owner Leon Godchaux. Locobase has found that Baldwin used a stock plantation engine design (see, e.g., Locobase 13485) that didn't differ from the template for many years as either 0-4-2Ts as seen here or 0-4-4-Ts.

A key spec was always the very light 25 lb/yard (12.5 kg/metre) rail weight on a line that ran alongside Bayou Lafourche for 12 miles (19.3 km) from Raceland southeast to Lockport's Field Lake..

According to the specs, three of the engines went to the LR&L as shown here. (See Locobase 16557 for the other three.)
