Medulla Phosphate Mining Company

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 10 (Locobase 16680)

Data from "Class 042 T 72", Negative D-152, American Locomotive Company, supplied by Chris Hohl in his 1 February 2025 email.. See also Reclaiming Brewster's list of mining towns on the Florida Mining Town Website at [], last accessed 12 October 2025. Works numbers were 42779-42783 in October 1910.

Medulla, Florida's name did not connote a phosphate mining company's ownership when Lewis M Ballard opened a post office in the settlement. Its geographical location about 25 miles (40 km) east of Tampa placed it near several phosphate deposits and led to Alco's description of the little tank's owner. C G Meminger called the mine he began exploiting in 1907 Medulla Mine, but in the same year, established another town, naming it Cristina after his only child. Medulla Mine became Cristina Medulla Phosphate Company.

Stanford Phosphate Company acquired Meminger's companies and worked the mine until it closed in the early 1930s.
