New York Glucose 0-6-0 "Switcher" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 16428)

Data from "A Wide Firebox Saddle Tank Locomotive", Railway Age, Volume 36, No 14 (2 October 1903), p. 428. Works number was 5946 in May 1903.

Designed to haul cars on and off the car ferries at Edgewater, NJ to NYG's Shady Side, NJ plant, this engine's combination of saddle tank and wide firebox took center stage in RA's report. The all-adhesion, saddle tank layout was dictated by the sharp inclines leading from the car floats and the tight alignments. A short locomotive with its weight concentrated on a short wheelbase was the answer. The firebox's wide grate enabled it to burn the combination of bituminous and anthracite coal used by NYG.

"Although there is considerable overhang at the rear," RA reported, "the engine balances nicely when in working condition."
