Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 23, p 4. For more information on the Oahu Sugar Company, see the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association's Plantation Archives online at [] . Works numbers were 17911 in July 1900, 18022 in August.
Locobase doesn't know enough Hawaiian history to comment on the significance of changing the name of the first locomotive from Hoaeae to Waikele soon after its arrival on Oahu. Waiawa didn't undergo a similar change.
Both plantation radial tank rode on the OSC's 30 lb/yard (15 kg/metre) rail, climbed the 2 1/2% to 3% grades, and worked around curves as tight as 20-25 degrees.
See Locobase 13455 to later engines equipped for oil burning.
Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 32, p. 237 and Vol 54, pp. 421+ . Works numbers were 32816 in July 1908 and 44661 in December 1916.
Locobase 12408 describes the first two locomotives of this arrangement to work on the Oahu Sugar's plantation lines.
Eight years after they were delivered, the company added the Waikakalaua; the one change was conversion to oil firing fueled by 250 gallons in a rear bunker and an increase in tank capacity to 850 gallons. 46 years later, this engine would be sold to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, which would display it in Los Angeles' Travel Town.
After another 8 years, the Oahu Sugar Company completed its quartet of radial tanks with Koalipea. This engine repeated the Waikakalua's dimensions and fuel method, but had greater water capacity of 880 US gallons (3,331 litres). Its adhesion weight rose to 47,000 lb (21,319 kg) and engine weight increased to 55,000 lb (24,948 kg).
