Erie 0-8-0 "Switcher" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 57 (Locobase 12540)

Data from Angus Sinclair, Development of the Locomotive Engine (New York: Angus Sinclair Publishing, 1907), p.266. (Sinclair attributes the 1853 American Railway Journal article from which he derived the information to Zerah Colburn.) Works numbers were377

378 in June 1850.

Locobase 1022 describes Baldwin's flexible-beam truck. All four axles were powered, butthe front two were carried in a truck that allowed a parallelogram shift in alignment as the locomotive entered or left a curve. Sinclair observes (probably repeating Colburn) that the use of coupling rods on the drivers in this front truck "...would prevent any sensible vibration". Locobase isn't sure from the context whether Sinclair-Colburn thought the flexible-beam was unnecessary.

In any case, the pair served as pushers on 1.3% grades. The design still used a haystack firebox and very large and tall wood-burner's stack.

Gene Connelly's Baldwin list shows two more 0-8-0s following immediately. They had smaller drivers (46") and smaller cylinders (17" x 22"). Their works numbers were 379 in December 1850 and 380 in June 1851.

Boiler pressure is a Locobase estimate.

Class 88 (Locobase 12548)

Data from Angus Sinclair, Development of the Locomotive Engine (New York: Angus Sinclair Publishing, 1907), p.269. (Sinclair attributes the 1853 American Railway Journal article from which he derived the information to Zerah Colburn.)

Impressive cylinder volume for the time and small drivers, which undoubtedly reduced the pair's range.

Boiler pressure is a Locobase estimate.
