The firebox on these locom0tives had a combustion chamber, which contributed 120 square feet to overall firebox surface area and 39 square feet of archtubes. There was 6,205 square feet of combined heating surface. Over time the boiler pressure was raised to 200 psi and then raised to 210 psi.
Some of the Class Q-1s were refitted later with a firebox that had 100 sq ft of thermic syphons and 18 sq ft of arch tubes, which contributed to an overall total of 498 sq ft of firebox heating surface. At least two used security circulators in a firebox presenting 477 square feet of direct heating surface. Like most 2-10-2s, these had 14"-diameter piston valves.
In 1946, three more 2-10-2s were added to the ACL roster when the Atlanta, Birmingham & Coast Railroad was merged with ACL. Three AB&C 2-10-2 locomotives (road numbers 401-403) became Class AF-1 and were assigned road numbers 7401-7403.
There are no surviving ACL 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type locomotives.

When delivered, the working boiler pressure was set at 195 psi (13.45 bar), which yielded a calculated 75,771 lb (34,369 kg) of tractive effort. Pressure was raised later to 200, then 210 psi.

At least two used security circulators in a firebox presenting 477 sq ft of direct heating surface. Like most 2-10-2s, these had 14" (356 mm)-diameter piston valves.
After service with the Atlantic Coast Line until 1951-1952, Nine of this class were sold to locomotive rebuilder/reseller Georgia Car & Locomotive. Between 1951 and mid-1953, GC&L sold all nine to the Chicago & Illinois Midland. 2000 and 2016 went first on 14 January 1951. 2013-2104 followed on 23 November and 2007 and 2018 finished 1951 on 19 December. Each of these six cost between $33,500 and $37,500 and took road numbers 704-709. The next 18 months undoubtedly produced a supply glut in the market, driving prices down. C&IM bought the last three on 25 May 1953, paying 25,500 for the first two (ex-2011 and 2019) and $16,500 for the last (ex-20050. The entire class was renumbered in 1953 as 751-759.
Designated H-2, the ex-ACL Santa Fes remained in C&IM service until it fully dieselized, at which point the H-2s entered retirement together on 31 December 1955 along with the other eighteen 2-10-2s..
