Arcata & Mad River 2-4-2 "Columbian" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Northern (Locobase 16282)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 27, p. 266. (Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 26 May 2017 email and worksheet providing an estimated firebox heating surface area.) Works number was 27073 in December 1905.

Locobase 12463 describes the 5, a little 2-4-0 built especially for the unusual gauge laid in the northern California forests. That engine had 1 1/2" (41 mm) tubes. This one used slightly fewer 2" tubes in the boiler and rolled in a bi-directional layout. The Radley & Hunter 11" (279 mm) diameter spark-arresting stack was indispensable.
