Data from Corbin & Kerka (1960), p. 84. See also Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 20, p. 16 and Engineering News December 1895 extract from [], Works number was 14410 in August 1895.
Relatively small, high-pitched boiler on a bar frame; 10" (254 mm) piston valves worked by inside Stephenson link.
One of few engines of this wheel arrangement to enter service. Baldwin's weight estimates
Corbin & Kerka note that the boiler was rebuilt in 1897 to eliminate the combustion chamber, which had not functioned as planned. All the tubes were replaced with ones that measured 13' 2 1/4" (4.02 m). Also, the wide firebox was replaced by one that was 36 1/4" wide and yielded 31.8 sq ft (2.95 sq m) in grate area.
The N-1 was later rebuilt as a 4-4-2 Atlantic; see Locobase 5453.
