East Branch & Lincoln 2-4-2 "Columbian" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 5 (Locobase 16544)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 29, p. 212,. Works number was 29575 in November 1906.

The 5 duplicated Blanchard & Twitchell's Berlin (Locobase 13018), but put more weight on the drivers and engine.

It's not clear from Gene Connelly's notes when the EB&L actually took delivery of the 5. Baldwin's specs give the EB&L as first operator. On the other hand, Connelly gives us Zealand Valley, which then sold the 5 to EB&L. Photos show a long-wheelbase, large saddle tank, three equal-sized domes consisting of 2 sand domes flanking a steam dome, and a long smokebox ahead of the tank.

In 1947, the Franconia Paper Company took possession of the 5. Eventually the FPC donated the engine as a display at Loon Mountain Ski area.

Class J E Henry (Locobase 12153)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 19, p. 72 Works numbers were 13167 and 13693 in January 1893, 14429 in August 1895, and 14449 in September.

Locobase 16543 shows the first three Baldwin saddle-tanks built in 1886 built for James Everell Henry's timber companies. It was a design that obviously suited the magnate because he ordered three more for his newly built EB&L logging line at Lincoln, NH.

According to the Baldwin spec, these engines were named J E Henry, Pittsburgh, and Osceola and had order IDs of 10-22 1/4C-16-18. Road numbers appear as 1, 2, and 2, respectively. EB&L's order requested that equalizer jaws and the rear truck's link bearing be made "extra strong", a nod to the stress accompanying logging-train operations, even on relatively heavy 56 lb/yard (28 kg/metre) rail. Under "weights", the buyer specified "as much on the drivers as possible", no figure reported.

Pittsburgh may have been canceled because of the 1893 Panic or deferrred as 10-22 1/4C-23, Lincoln, arrived two years later.
