Warrenton 2-4-2 "Columbian" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 4 (Locobase 15211)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 71, pp. 198+. Works number was 55467 in May 1922.

This engine had an even more unusual arrangement for an American locomotive than the 2-4-2T tank engine used by many logging companies. Tralling a tender, serving a mixed-traffic service, and arriving on the railroad so late in the steam era combine to make this a rare beast indeed. A photograph showing the 4 with its bi-directional suggests that it was really an 0-6-0 that the WRR wanted to be bi-directional.

Later in its career, the 4 served the Atlantic & Carolina, the Oats Lumber Company, and finally the Beaufort & Morehead.
