Illinois Central 2-4-4 Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 221/225 (Locobase 6981)

Data from IC 1911 locomotive data tables supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also E E R Tratman, "Tank Locomotives", Official Proceedings of the Western Railway Club (Chicago: W F Hall Printing Company, 1903), pp. 342 et seq. Works numbers were 3183, 3199, 3196 in January 1883, 3202-3203 in February, 3208 in March

These Forneys were the first of a large fleet of several arrangements that pulled short-haul commuter traffic in the Chicago area. The 1402 had a slightly larger grate that measured 13.2 sq ft. (1.23 sq m) in area. That was the prototype for a larger batch described in Locobase 6982.

Like most of the others, these tanks were rated by the IC at 70,000 miles between general repairs. That number means a bit more if we can establish how many daily miles such high-intensity service might have racked up.

Class 223/1409 (Locobase 6948)

Data from IC 1913ca locomotive diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also E E R Tratman, "Tank Locomotives", Official Proceedings of the Western Railway Club (Chicago: W F Hall Printing Company, 1903), pp. 342 et seq.

This was the Forney design that pulled short-haul commuter traffic in the Chicago area. The first two delivered in 1885 as 223-224. In 1887-1890, the shops added 56-60, 62-63, and 76. The class was renumbered in 1890 as 209-218 and renumbered later by adding 1200 to each number.

Class 225 / 1403 (Locobase 6982)
