Altoona & Beech Creek 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 5 (Locobase 12483)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 23, p. 242. Works numbers 18844 in March 1901 and 18970 in May. See George Woodman Hilton, American Narrow-Gauge Railroads (Stanford, Calif: Stanford University Press, 1990), p.484.

United Collieries, parent of the Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Ebensburg & Eastern short line in western Pennsylvania , was far more successful at prolonging the lawsuits over its debts than actually building a railroad. The only two locomotives actually supplied to the line were these two Moguls, which served the A & BC. The road struggled to survive and failed in July 1919.

NB: The A & BC was the third incarnation of this narrow-gauge line. As the Altoona & Wopsononock, it opened in May 1891, it ascended 1,300 feet in 8 miles. Later that year, the line was renamed the Altoona, Clearfield & Northern and extended another 5 miles to Dougherty.
