Lake Shore & Michigan Southern 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class L (Locobase 9517)

Data from the Twelfth Annual Report of the American Railway Master Mechanics' Association, May 13th-May 15th, 1879, page 83. See also DeGolyer, Volume 7, p. 31. Works numbers ran 3496, 3500-3503, 3505-3506, 3508 in November 1873; 3512, 3515-3518 in December.

In discussing the relative merits of deep versus shallow fireboxes, Mr Sedgley of the LS&MS described tests between the straight-boilered Moguls from Baldwin and seven wagon-top Eight-wheelers (Locobase 9518). Sedgley said that the seven 2-6-0s averaged 41.95 loaded cars per train mile over a total mileage of 228,057 and consumed just a bit less coal per car than did the Eight-wheelers.

NB: Boiler pressure is an estimate and the heating surface of the tubes (no firebox area is given) is measured from the inside; water side area would be 8-10% greater.
