Mount Hope Mineral 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 4 (Locobase 14941)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 65, pp. 111+. Works numbers were 53947 in November 1920.

Five years after the Empire Steel and Iron Company bought a smallish Consolidation (Locobase 14345) for its Mount Hope Mineral railway in New Jersey, it returned to Eddystone and bought a larger Mogul. The engine put more weight on three adhesive axles, had more cylinder volume, and slightly larger boiler and grate. Relatively heavy 70 and 80 lb/yard (35 and 40 kg/metre) rails ran on a tight profile that included 30 degree curves and 3% grades.

When the Mount Hope disposed of its locomotives in 1930, it sold the 4 to locomotive rebuilder/reseller Birmingham Rail & Locomotive. BR&L soon found a buyer in the nearby Middletown & Union, which renumbered it 5. In 1935, the M&U sold the 5 to Pittson, Pa's West Pittson Exeter north of Scranton. The 5 moved coal for the Scranton Illuminating Company's generating stations. It was scrapped in 1952.
