Data from Birmingham & Northwestern Locomotive Diagrams supplied in August 2013. Works numbers were 1569-1574 in September 1885.
This Mogul sextet from the Ocean State was originally ordered by the St Louis & Cairo, which was acquired by the M&O before they were delivered.
One of the six was sold in 1912 to the B&NW as its #20. Their diagram showed a firebox heating surface area of 217 sq ft. That eye-popping figure is clearly too high and other figures in the diagram confirms a math error that added 100 sq ft to the actual figure.
Data from AB&SOU 6 -1919 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also DeGolyer, Volume 11, p. 10. Works numbers were 6350-6351 in August 1882; 6401-6402, 6411, 6414, 6430-6431 in October.
The details in the Baldwin spec book differ a little from the A&S diagrams, differences that probably stem from the later installation of a new boiler. When ordered, the locomotives were to have 200 2' tubes, each measuring 10 ft 8 3/8 inches (3.26 m). Weight estimates came in much lower than the later diagrams would suggest: 66,000 lb (29,937 kg) on the drivers, and 80,000 lb (36,287 kg) for the total engine weight. The tenders were smaller, too, holding only 2,400 US gallons (9,084 litres).
#62 (works 6401) was sold to the Alabama & Mississippi in 1909; that railroad sold the 62 to the Mississippi & Alabama (probably a corporate, rather than a physical, move) in September 1922. #65 (6411), by now renumbered 503, took that number to the De Kalb & Western (Sanoody Valley) by 1915 to help open the line in 1916. The other five were scrapped by 1922.
