Class 4 (Locobase 11600)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1888, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 15, p. 44. Works number was 10159 in August 1889.

Apparently the PJM&NY was pretty steamed at the failure of the Mogul tank delivered in March 1889 (Locobase 11597) to meet requirements. Baldwin supplied another, smaller Mogul with a tender only a few months later that had the same road number.

This #4 was more satisfactory, but was sold in 1903 to McKean Chemical Company, which sold it in 1906 to Southern Lumber Company.

In 1900, the PJM & NY advertised itself as "Shortest route to these ideal mountain and lake resorts: Monticello, the hub of Sullivan County. Lake Kiamesha, White Lake, and other picturesque and healthful resorts adjacent."

This tank engine was an immediate disappointment to the PJM & NY, which returned it to Baldwin in May 1889; Baldwin's replacement engine is described in Locobase 11600.

The earlier engine wasn't scrapped, but sold instead in 1890 to Choctaw Coal & Iron in Oklahoma (see Locobase 8359 for details on this railroad).
