Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volumes 26, p. 268 and 31, p. 107. Works numbers were 23883 in March 1904 and 32249 in November 1907.
For some reason the first of these two little Moguls carried the builder's number on the number plate - certainly inflated the public image of the rolling stock of this Williams, Ariz lumber railroad. The 3's specifications show a heavier engine with a relatively precise adhesion weight estimate of 90,850 lb and an engine weight of 106,730 lb.
The S & ML of Arizona was a subsidiary of the Michigan lumber company; it obtained a lease of forest lands on the northern rim of the Grand Canyon in 1911 and these 2-6-0s operated in the high desert well into the 1950s.
