A H Stange Lumber Company 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 2 (Locobase 11726)

Data from Negative 8440, Southern Methodist University, Central University Libraries, DeGolyer Library collection of digitized Baldwin images, retrieved 26 October 2010 from [link] . See also DeGolyer, Vol 71, pp. 398+. Works number was 55573 in July 1922.

The negative shows an unusual arrangement of the outside radial Walschaert valve gear. To allow for the proper length of combination rod, the link was mounted over the middle driver.

Although lettered for AH Stange of Merrill, Wisc, this Prairie logger was operated by William Boniface Lumber over 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail up 3% grades and around 25 degree curves. It seems to have run in Saint Bernard Mining service later and after that, the Mosinee Paper Mills.
