Babcock & Wilcox 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 3 (Locobase 14325)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 53, pp. 60+. Works number was 44488 in November 1916.

Even though the B & W works in Bayonne, NJ, wouldn't have been expected to offer steep grades and sharp curves, the company required that the 3 pull 220 ton short tons up a 4% grade and negotiate curves of 44 1/2 degrees (radii of 135 feet/41.1 metres). Also all windows and doors were to be "made so that they can be entirely removed in the summer. Wire screens to be provided for back windows."
