Peking Hankow 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 511 (Locobase 10975)

Data from "Prairie Type (2-6-2) Locomotives Built for the Peking-Hankow Railway China," The Weekly Review of the Far East, Vol XX, No 8 (22 April 1922), pp. 306, 308. See also DeGolyer, Volume 60, pp. 229+. Works numbers were 54718-54740 in April 1921 and 54753-54761, 54778-54782, 54788-54801 in May 1921.

In addition to the basic equipment, the China Weekly Review's report notes the extras: "Westinghouse airbrakes, Nathan simplex No. 8 type K. injectors, Nathan five feed Bull's Eye lubricators, Coale safety valves, 18" round case headlights fitted with Pyle National type K-2 ' incandescent electric equipment and Janney M. C. B. automatic couplers." Ten-inch (254 mm) piston valves served the cylinders. Firebox heating surface area included 56 sq ft (5.2 sq m) in the combustion chamber and 15 sq ft (1.4 sq m) of arch tubes.

These were the latest Prairies to be built for this railway. Compared to North American 2-6-2s, the design was small and low-drivered.
