S & A Lumber Company 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 14289)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 52, p. 318. Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 28 February 2015 email giving the fuel capacity. Works number was 42069 in May 1915.

These small wood-burning Prairies had relatively large tenders with more fuel capacity (4 cords of wood). Like most logging engines, the specs for this locomotive included an admonition that "springs to be extra heavy for rough track."

S & A operated in Marion and Putnam counties from its headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla.
