St Louis Water Works 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 2 (Locobase 13692)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 35, p. 331. (Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 4 April 2015 email correcting the locomotive's boiler pressure and engine weight.) See Locobase 13263 for a history of the StL WW.Works number was 35159 in August 1910.

Locobase cannot figure out why Baldwin supplied a locomotive with such an outlandish ratio of heating surface area to grate area. The specs confirm the numbers and the ratio.

This Prairie freighter served the Water Works for 17 years before being sold east to locomotive rebuilder/reseller Birmingham Rail & Locomotive in May 1927. BR&L turned the engine around quickly, sending to the Tennessee & North Carolina a month later as their 105. Based in Newport, Tenn, the road remained open until 1951.
