Santee Timber 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 14710)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 62, p. 387. Works number was 43349 in May 1916 and 53177 in April 1920.

Locobase can't find much on Santee Timber, except to note that it operated in Berkley County, South Carolina. The 1 was bought for switching service, which implied 12 degree curves. It also had to be ready to roll on 35 lb/yard (17.5 kg/metre) rail. The specs also show that Santee wanted the engine "to be built strong enough to work at 200 pounds pressure, if necesssary."

The 1 would later be sold to Camp Manufacturing, which used the engine on its tram roads and on the 6-mile Carolina Western.
