Bell's Gap / Bingham & Garfield 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class 12 / Odd H / B (Locobase 11569)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1888, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 15, p. 6. Works numbers were 9734-9737 in January 1889; 9805-9806, 9808 in February; 10492 in December; and 10617 in January 1890.

After its conversion to standard gauge in 1881-1884, the BGRR bought new locomotives. This class of Consolidations were mostly delivered to the Bell's Gap, but that railroad was merged with the Clearfield & Jefferson on 27 December 1889 as the Pennsylvania & Northwestern. When the P&NW was taken over by the Pennsylvania Railroad in February 1902, they redesignated this the Bellwood Branch, connecting that town with Punxsutawney and Fordham.

NB: Although the Baldwin specs do not give heating surface areas, Locobase is confident that the values given for firebox and evaporative heating surface areas are valid. The C&D diagram for the 110 (Locobase 7104) supplied both measurements and a comparison of .Baldwin specs shows that all relevant values in all three sheets are identical to the 1/16". Locobase adjusted both areas by deleting the 22.5 sq ft of arch tubes shown in the C&D locomotive; these were added later in that engine.


Class 200 (Locobase 6943)

Data from B&G - UCCO Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange and from the Utah Rails site [link] and [link], accessed 1 July 2005. Works number was 54900 in July 1914.

The firebox heating surface includes four arch tubes of 30 sq ft (2.79 sq m).

This single Consolidation must have looked lonely among the switchers and giant, all-adhesion Mallets that made up the stud of this copper-mining road in Utah.
