Buffalo & St. Marys 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 7 (Locobase 2631)

Data from Catalogue Descriptive of Simple and Compound Locomotives built by Brooks Locomotive Works, Dunkirk, NY (Buffalo, NY: Matthew-Northrup Company, 1899). Works numbers were 2663-2664 in May 1896.

Builder info from B.Rumary, 25 Kingscombe, Gurney Slade, Radstock, BA3 4TH, ENGLAND and Jeremy Lambert as supplied by Allen Stanley in March 2004.

Within a year of their delivery, these two 2-8-0s were relettered for the Buffalo, St.Mary's and SouthWestern to which Brooks sold a Mogul in the next year (Locobase 2611). Like the 2-6-0, the Consolidations for this railroad had a crown bar, wagon top boiler with steam dome just ahead of the clerestory cab. It offered considerably more heating surface and grate area than the Mogul by adding flues; flue length was virtually identical. Adding an axle allowed more adhesion weight for the same axle loading, which compensated for the effect on starting tractive effort of a 34% increase in cylinder volume.

These took Pittsburgh, Shawmut & Northern road numbers 44 & 45 when the PS & N absorbed several western New York roads in 1899. Designated class H-2, the 7 served the line for more than two decades before being scrapped in December 1924. The 9 followed in July 1925.
