Columbia River Belt Line 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Big Jack (Locobase 14719)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 62, p. 415. Works number was 53037 in February 1920.

Baldwin built this superheated logging Consolidation for the Whitney Company, which operated the CRBL. It was a typical 2-8-0 for that service, although its 11" (279 mm) piston valves were on the large size. The rail line presented relatively modest grades of 1-2% and was laid with 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail. Still, braking power loomed large and the drivers were held back by both air and steam brake systems.

In 1927, the Whitney Company sold Big Jack to Tidewater Logging of Jewell, Ore, it lost its grand number and became #53 and went to work on the 18 mile (29 km) Astoria Southern.

When the AS Rwy closed in 1943, the 53 was sold to the Cowlitz Chehalis & Cascade of Chehalis, Wash and renumbered 25. The CC&C operated the 25 for another decade before donating to the City of Centralia in 1955.
