Harriman Lines 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Heavy Consolidation C-187 (Locobase 5342)

Data from"Report of Committee on Power-Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway-Descriptions of Standard Types of Locomotives," American Engineer and Railroad Journal, Volume 79 ( March 1905), pp. 84-86.

Part of the so-called "Harriman Common Standard", this class was completed without a superheater. Using the same firebox as the HCS Atlantics and Light Pacifics, the design had a middling number of tubes for a 2-8-0 of this size. Unlike the other two road engines of this policy, however, these were relatively big engines for their time and wheel arrangements and had comparatively big boilers for their cylinder volume.

Locobase 3165 (Southern Pacific) and 4399 (Union Pacific) are examples of this design. See Locobase 5340 for introduction to the HCS idea.
