Kushequa 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Evan O' Kane (Locobase 15658)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 23, p. 217. Works number was 18687 in February 1901.

In the right circumstances, exactly duplicating a tried-and-true design could be the best choice for a short line. The Kushequa was a western Pennsylvania railroad of uncertain finances that bought this Consolidation, which was a copy of engines supplied by the Philadelphia builder to the Bell's Gap in 1889 (Locobase 11569) and Chickamauga & Durham in 1893 (Locobase 7104).

When the Kushequa closed in 1906, the 9 was taken over by the Mount Jewett, Kinzua & Ritterville, where it operated until scrapped in 1931.

NB: Although the Baldwin specs do not give heating surface areas, Locobase is confident that the valuues given for firebox and evaporative heating surface areas are valid. The C&D diagram for the 110 supplied both measurements and a comparison of Baldwin specs shows that all relevant values in all three sheets are identical to the 1/16". Locobase adjusted both areas by deleting the 22.5 sq ft of arch tubes shown in the C&D locomotive; these were added later in that engine.
