Toledo, Peoria & Western / Toledo, Peoria, & Western 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class H-1 (Locobase 13924)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 41, p. 184, 186. Works numbers were 35160-35161 in October 1910 and 37625-37626 in April 1912.

The TP & W bought this quartet of relatively small Consolidations and ordered Belpaire fireboxes. A later order included superheat; see Locobase 13925.

All four were scrapped in April 1937

Class H-2 (Locobase 13925)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 41, p. 184, 186. Works numbers were 41107-41108 in January 1914.

Essentially the same as the H-1s delivered by Baldwin in the previous couple of years (Locobase 13924), this pair came to the road with superheaters installed. The Improved Belpaire firebox was a notable feature.

While the others were retired before World War II, these remained in service until April 1948.

Class H-8/H-9 (Locobase 7445)

In February 2006, Locobase put out a call for information on TP & W locomotives on the Classic Trains forum and received diagrams from Ray Breyer, a Peoria-based modeller who had obtained several pages of TP & W diagrams. From the diagram and the accompanying roster, Locobase was able to compile this entry on the most modern TP & W locomotives other than the H-10 Northerns.

Alco delivered two H-8s in October (works #44081) and November (44120) 1907. Almost three years later, 72-73 were produced in May 1910 (works #47698, 47704). The relatively generous firebox heating surface included 31 sq ft of arch tubes.

At the other end of their TP & W careers, the quartet went to Keystone in 1948-49 in the following order:

73 7/14/48

72 3/18/49

70 4/14/49

71 4/19/49
